ESPP - a short history

The ESPP was founded in 1992 in Tilburg, The Netherlands (as a sister organisation to the SPP, founded in 1974 in North America).

The founding members of the ESPP were Beatrice de Gelder, Larry Weiskrantz, Daniel Andler, Martin Davies, Antony Marcel and Christopher Peacocke. Others who played a major role in setting up the society and sustaining it in its early years were Pierre Jacob, Josef Perner, Pascal Engel, Manuel Garcia-Carpintero, Marc Jeannerod, John Campbell, Dan Sperber and Deirdre Wilson.

The first conference was in 1992, in Leuven, Belgium, and it has been held every year since, at venues in the UK, France, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Austria, Germany, The Netherlands, Sweden, Hungary, Switzerland, Estonia, Croatia and Greece, until 2020 when Covid-19 necessitated its cancellation.

We have had two joint conferences with the SPP: in 2004, in Barcelona, Spain, and in 2011, in Montreal, Canada.  A third joint SPP/ESPP conference is planned for 2022 in Milan.

The aim of the Society is "to promote interaction between philosophers and psychologists on issues of common concern". Psychologists, neuroscientists, linguists, computer scientists and biologists are encouraged to report experimental, theoretical and clinical work that they judge to have philosophical significance; and philosophers are encouraged to engage with the fundamental issues addressed by and arising out of such work.
